“Our audiences wanted us to go beyond science, to be a space where science meets art.”

That’s how Donna Speed, Chief Executive of We The Curious, described the clear response from a major audience research project in 2015.

“They asked us to be challenging, to confront stereotypes, introduce bold ideas and take a stand where it mattered.

“And they asked us to change our name.”

The science centre, then called At-Bristol, listened carefully to their community’s feedback.

“It took two years of work to shape and launch our new direction, complete with a new name, vision, mission, values, strategic priorities, key pledges and manifesto,” Donna said.

The new vision: Imagine a future where everyone is included, curious and inspired by science to build a better world together. The team prepared a new exhibit centred on the curiosity of their city. But just as they were about to unveil their transformation, obstacles arose.

The pandemic hit. Like many organisations during that period, We The Curious struggled with a lack of funding. In 2022, as the team prepared to return to full capacity, the building’s roof caught fire. The flood of water that extinguished the flames caused extensive damage to the museum.

The team forged ahead by bringing installations and activities to every corner of the Bristol community. Bristol showed up for them in return with emotional, physical and monetary support.

In July 2024, We The Curious reopened their doors for the first time in two years. By staying true to their vision and their values, they bounced back more successful than ever.

“What's carried us through — every fire, every flood, every pivot — has been the unwavering belief in our vision and in each other,” Donna said.

“Purpose isn't just a statement on a wall. It's something you live. It's something you fight for. And if you really mean it, it has the power to bring you home.”
